A Turning Point After Junior Year
At the end of his junior season at DeSales, Jonathan Brown was a talented football player with potential.
But he wasn’t being recruited by major college programs yet.
Like many high school athletes, he was at a crossroads. He had the ability to compete, but the next step would require physical development, consistency, and preparation.
Instead of waiting for opportunities to come to him, Brown committed to attacking the offseason.
As the official strength and conditioning provider at St. Francis DeSales, JB was already training with Ohio Athletic Performance at school lifting sessions, but he knew he needed more. He began training consistently at the OAP facility, focusing on improving the physical qualities that often separate high school athletes from college-level players: adding significant muscle while still improving strength, speed, and explosiveness.
The Work That Change Everything
During that offseason, Brown made a major physical transformation.
Through consistent strength training and athletic development work, he added nearly 30 pounds of muscle, dramatically changing his recruiting story.
That transformation changed more than just his size. It improved his strength, explosiveness, and durability as a running back.
By the time his senior season arrived, Brown had developed into a much more physically prepared athlete — and it showed on the field.
Offseason Training for DeSales Athletes
JB is one example of how much athlete development can happen during one offseason.
Many athletes from St. Francis DeSales High School train at Ohio Athletic Performance during the offseason to improve speed, strength, and overall athletic performance.
Located in Columbus, Ohio Athletic Performance works with middle school and high school athletes across Central Ohio who are looking to prepare for the next level of competition.
For football players especially, the offseason is often when the biggest improvements happen.
It’s the time athletes build the physical foundation that carries into the season.
Before beginning his college football career, Brown spent the offseason training at Ohio Athletic Performance to prepare for the physical demands of the next level.
Our Director of Sports Performance, Austin Addington-Strapp, him described it this way: “When JB came in to OAP, he was a talented athlete but we knew he needed to physically develop if he wanted to play at the next level. He committed to the process, showed up consistently, and completely transformed his body during the offseason. The work he put in made a huge difference in how college coaches saw him.”
That commitment to development helped transform Brown into a stronger and more explosive running back heading into his senior season.
When Opportunity Followed Development
As Brown’s senior season began, the results of that offseason work became clear.
Stronger, faster, and more confident, he emerged as a standout player for DeSales.
College coaches began taking notice.
What started as a focused offseason development plan quickly turned into a recruiting story.
By the end of his high school career, Brown had earned the opportunity to continue his football journey at the University of Michigan, one of the premier programs in college football.
The Lesson for Developing Athletes
Jonathan Brown’s journey highlights something coaches see every year.
The biggest improvements often happen between seasons.
When athletes commit to offseason development, they can:
- build strength and power
- improve speed and explosiveness
- increase confidence in their abilities
- prepare physically for higher levels of competition
For athletes with the talent and work ethic, the offseason can become the turning point in their athletic journey.
Start Your Training Journey
Jonathan Brown’s journey is a great example of how much can change during one single offseason when an athlete commits to development. The difference between one season and the next often comes down to the work that happens when no on is watching – building strength, improving speed, and adding muscle to prepare the body to compete at a higher level.
At Ohio Athletic Performance, that process is measured and tracked through training and testing so athletes can see their progress over time. For athletes with the talent and work ethic to pursue the next level, that kind of consistent development can make a significant difference.
Athletes who want to improve speed, strength, and athletic performance can begin by attending a free training class at Ohio Athletic Performance, where our coaches observe movement and recommend the best training path for their development.
